Penny Ashford finds inspiration in nature and travel . Water is a favorite subject, particularly the movement, light and color of the sea. Literally immersed in her subject, Ashford specialized underwater camera transforms the traditional horizontal horizon line into a fluid moving plane that upends expectations. Extreme close-ups of bubbles and swirling currents become abstract forms with biomorphic structure and composition. Ashford's abiding interest in classic photojournalism leads the composition of her travel photos to move beyond the purely visual and into realm of storytelling.
Ashford graduated from Mount Holyoke College and studied at the International Center for Photography in New York. She has been exhibited in the Newport Art Museum, Coleman Center of Education in Newport, RI , Cade Tompkins Gallery, Providence, RI, The Antigue and Artisian Gallery, Stamford, CT,as well as galleries throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic.
